One way that I challenged the conventions of music videos was by challenging Vernallis, who says 'men act and women appear'. I did this by making Katie the main actress in the video and the boys who appeared in the narrative fill the typical role of women, slightly passive and oppressed by the women. This also shows how McRobbie's theory of how "men and women are shown through stereotypes" as well.
In typical pop videos, women are often shown wearing minimalist clothes in order to attract the 'male gaze', a theory put forward by Mulvey. I made sure that the images in my video were not just for the 'male gaze' but a woman too. This is because I wanted my artist to be someone that women could look up too as being independent and powerful, not just an object for men. This contrasts from Strinarti's view of how "women are usually shown as being subordinate, passive and submissive." This helps to make my artist stand out from the typical people in the music industry.
I also challenged conventions by centring my video around my artist rather than just featuring her in the video. This links to Goodwin's theory of 'star persona'. This shows how the artist is the most important part, increasing branding and the audiences interest in her and her personality.
I also challenged another one of Goodwin's theories, the idea of a link between visuals and lyrics. This is due to the fact that I decided to illustrate the lyrics but twist them to mean the opposite of what is being said. This way it is more interesting for the audience, link with Barthes, allowing the audience to solve the mystery through the use of enigma codes.
